Brands are making bold moves concerning their Black Friday agendas. Last week REI announced that none of its 143 stores would be participating in the traditional Black Friday festivities this year. Management took a stand and has decided instead, to pay its employees to go and spend the day outside enjoying some of the same outdoor activities they enable their customers to do everyday.
Although REI won’t be offering door buster deals on Black Friday, they assure customers that they can count great deals throughout the holiday season.
Since the announcement, many other retailers have begun to follow suit and will be closed the day after Thanksgiving. I’m not much of a shopper and I don’t think I’ve ever shopped on Black Friday, but I think allowing employees the opportunity to spend this time with their families, or at least not at work, is a step in the right direction and I applaud you.
